Although Southern Yellow Pine is a relatively soft, low-strength timber, its real attributes lie in its visual appeal. The wood itself consists of a medium to coarse texture and a beautiful straight grain that makes it suitable for a wide range of gorgeous furniture, flooring and joinery projects.
This wood is moderately easy to work, but the resin can be troublesome, tending to clog saw teeth and stick to machine tables.
Takes glues, nails and screws well and can be finished to a high standard. The high contrast produced by the colour of the growth rings makes this wood a particularly beautiful choice for a wide range of practical and creative applications.
Name: Pinus palustris
Country of Origin: Sourced from southern states of the US, they’re typically found along East Texas to South Virginia coastal plain and into central Florida. The timber is derived from an evergreen conifer that thrives in most habitats but prefers dry, sandy and acidic soil types.
Uses: Joinery, stairs, benches, chairs, baskets, pallets, woodenware utensils, cutlery, plates and tableware.

Colour(s): The heartwood is a reddish brown colour with well-marked reddish-brown growth rings and the sapwood is yellow-white.
The Timber: This southern states softwood is fairly low strength, physically soft and light in weight with a straight grain, a medium to coarse texture and a resinous quality. The characteristic straight grain makes it suitable for a wide range of beautiful furniture, flooring and joinery projects. The high contrast produced by the colour of the growth rings makes this wood a particularly beautiful choice for a wide range of practical and creative applications.
Strength: The timber itself is soft, lightweight and lower in density but does offer some durability. The heartwood is also known for being moderately resistant to decay and the relative softness of the wood will make it very suitable for an array of interior projects, tools and furniture.
Working Qualities: Yellow Pine responds well to most woodworking tools and takes glues, nails and screws well, finishing to a high-quality standard. Extra care may need to be taken due to the resinous content of the wood, so to avoid saw teeth and sandpaper clogging or machine table sticking, ensure that you have high-grade tools and materials to hand and make necessary preparations prior to the woodworking process.

I recently purchased 2 replacement floorboards. I had previously butchered some old scaffolding planks to the extent that the job looked worse than a hit and run accident. Woodshopdirect put up with an initial inaccuracy in an order and were hot on their communication. They also got in touch with me and gave the haulage company a seeing to when they didn’t deliver on time. The product is outstanding and I couldn’t rate the company highly enough.

Yes, it's yellow pine, but it was such good quality - I'd grown used to the terrible fast-grown offerings from big chain DIY shops, that I'd forgotten that pine could be this nice - it is destined for several big shelves and window sills - thank you!

Palletised Delivery Information
- Due to the size and weight of goods, some items will be sent via a roadside palletised delivery.
- We will contact you prior to dispatch to arrange a convenient weekday delivery.
- If a large curtain-sided lorry (the size of a double-decker bus) is unable to access/vacate your premises or pull-up outside the property (restricted access) your pallet may be sent on a ‘Book-In’ service, which means your local depot will contact you and arrange a date and suitable delivery transport with you. Your local delivery depot will call the next working day after dispatch to book the delivery with you for delivery within 5 working days.
- If a large curtain-sided lorry (the size of a double-decker bus) is able to access your premises and pull up outside the property, your pallet can be delivered on the next weekday suitable for you. Please let us know by 11:00 am the day before, so that we can dispatch in time.

Please be aware, if a forklift is unavailable at the delivery address (e.g. a residential address) people will be required to unload from the pallet by hand. This is for the health and safety of the delivery driver.

We use a third-party courier service who have a strict policy on abuse or harassment towards their drivers. In any case where there is abuse or harassment, the driver is within their rights to refuse delivery.

- If you wish to arrange a collection with a courier of your choice then we are more than happy to package the goods for you. Please email us your full cutting list for specific prices and estimated weight and dimensions.
- Contactless collection is an option for any order. Our collections take place at our workshop in Falmouth, Cornwall between the hours of 9 am-4 pm any weekday excluding bank holidays.
- We will contact you once the goods are ready to collect, so a convenient timeslot can be arranged.
