Also known as British Columbian Pine or Oregon Pine, our cut-to-size Douglas Fir timber is light reddish-brown in colour with prominent growth rings and much lighter-coloured sapwood. Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, this softwood timber has a medium texture and is very tough, moderately hard and has a resilient straight grain.

Takes glues, nails and screws well and can be finished to a high standard. Available in lengths up to 3400mm, this versatile timber wood is great for a range of applications.

Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii

Uses: Interior/exterior joinery, structural use, cladding, flooring, and boat building. Furniture, doors, cabinet trims, flooring, worktops, desktops, shelving.

Country of Origin: Native to northwest America and Canada, from central California up to British Columbia. Douglas Fir thrives in neutral to acidic well-drained soils located within a range of different environments including mossy moisture-heavy forests and even some drier areas. However, it is sensitive to drought and will not thrive in very dry and compacted soils.

Woodshop’s Preferred Finish: Osmo Polyx Hardwax oil 3062, 3032, 3044, Osmo Top Oil 3058, 3068. External: Osmo UV 420, 429

Durability: Moderately Durable (10 - 15 years)

Density: 530 Density (Kg/m³)

Colour(s): Usually reddish or light brown with subtle tones of red or yellow with dark growth rings. The sapwood takes on a creamy white appearance.

The Timber: This popular softwood comes with a medium texture and large grain patterns that can vary between being straight and wavy in appearance. It also has a moderate natural lustre.

Strength: Douglas Fir is one of the toughest softwoods you’ll come across, featuring a moderately hard composition and great stability with a low risk of warping, splitting or bending due to atmospheric conditions. It’s also resistant to rot and decay, making it a great choice for indoors and out.

Working Qualities: Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, Douglas Fir will take glues, nails and screws well and can be finished to a high standard. It can cause cutters to become slightly blunted, so extra care and high-quality wood cutters will produce the best results.

Uses: Internal, External

Good quality wood

Very good wood for any type of furniture

As described but not perfect

by Simonjoyner55 (10/28/2021)

Was trying to match wood to modify/extend existing built-in cupboards. Wood matched perfectly and was as described. Delivered in substantial packaging but there were still a few dents (small, ~1cm wide x 2-3mm deep), which clearly happened after planing but pre-packaging. Not great considering I ordered such a small amount, and was using it for the front-facing surface of a cupboard. Couldn't afford to return so went ahead and the end result still looks great. Wood was straight and sound in all other ways.

Good but expensive.

by Micahel4423 (09/08/2021)

I needed some good quality timber for use on a balcony that had to be exactly the right size and quality for this job. The only downside for me was the cost.
