Our planed all round cut-to-size Sapele is a widely used and popular Redwood timber, similar to Mahogany. This hardwood product features a deep, rich finish suited to furniture projects, conservatories and much more. Sapele timber is characterised by its heavy strength and durability, interlocked grain and natural lustre. The versatile wood also benefits from a distinctive red-brown colour that darkens as it matures and ages.

Our cut-to-size Sapele can require a little more expertise and care when working with machines, however, it nails, screws and glues effectively and finishes beautifully.

Name: Entandrophragma cylindricum

Uses: Furniture, windows, conservatories, doors, cabinets, decorative work, joinery, veneer, panelling, cabinet trims, flooring, worktops, desktops, shelving, windows, conservatories, boatbuilding, breakfast bars. A class one hardwood, Sapele can be used as an alternative to Brazilian mahogany, offering a much cheaper option.

Country of Origin: Emanating from tropical Africa, this tree can be found in areas ranging from the Ivory Coast to the Cameroons and Zaire to Uganda. Its habitat is usually semi-deciduous forests but evergreen forests can also be a great place for Sapele trees to grow. Sapele grows best in well-drained soils and is notable for being able to tolerate dry forest surroundings more than related tree species.

Woodshop’s Preferred Finish: Osmo 1101 Extra Thin Wood Wax, Osmo UV 420, Osmo 007 Teak Oil

Durability: Moderately Durable (10 - 15 years)

Density: 640 Density (Kg/m³)

Colour(s): The heartwood is a reddish brown that resembles Mahogany and darkens as it matures. It will look pink or pale red when newly cut.

The Timber: This tropical African hardwood is characterised by its rich, deep, Mahogany-like appearance. It typically has a fine, close texture and a gentle undulating or mottled grain that is often interlocking. It has a medium hardness and an attractive lustre with a uniform stripy appearance on quarter-sawn boards.

Strength: Considerably harder and heavier than African or American sourced Mahogany, Sapele is also resilient to denting and resistant to shock loads, making it a highly practical choice for your next project. It’s also highly stable and can be very durable against decay and insect attack. Its strength is most comparable to that of English Oak.

Working Qualities: Owing to its strength and hardness, it can require some extra work when machining and can blunt certain cutters. However, it does nail, screw and glue effectively and finishes beautifully. To minimise the risk of tear-outs of this cut-to-size hardwood, take extra care, use high-quality equipment or seek the expertise and advice of an experienced woodworker.
