Part of the Shorea group of hardwoods, our Cut-To-Size Planed All Round Meranti Timber is a unique, attractive and easy-to-work wood material that varies in colour, from light pink to deep red. Featuring a coarse, even texture and an interlocked grain, this material has a great overall hardness and stable strength for practical woodworking projects and functional applications.

Meranti varies in durability but offers good strength and hardness overall, providing additional resistance to decay and insect attack. Responds reasonably well to glues, nails and screws. Machines and finishes well.

With a pale red/pinkish colour, Meranti is an attractive wood with many uses.

Name: Shorea

Uses: Exterior and interior joinery, construction, flooring, windows, doors, cladding, furniture, boat building, general construction, cabinets, flooring.

Country of Origin: South East Asia. Meranti is derived from Shorea spp trees that originate in Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Northern India, Malaysia and Indonesia. These tall trees grow most abundantly in lowland dipterocarp forest, hill forests and coastal forests.

Woodshop’s Preferred Finish: Osmo Uv Pro 420, 429

Durability: Moderately Durable (5-10 years)

Density: Low to medium density - 710 Density (Kg/m³)

Colour(s): Pale red or pinkish tone to reddish-brown in colour.

The Timber: Often sold under the moniker of Philippine Mahogany, this beautiful hardwood is characterised by its straight, subtle and uniform grain with large pores. The heartwood varies in colour from dark red and purple to a straw yellow or pale white in its extreme examples, but it’s most commonly pale red and pinkish in tone or reddish brown. Resistant to denting and abrasion, Meranti is certainly strong and durable enough for both interior and exterior joinery, lending itself to projects that favour function and practicality as well as style and simplicity.

Strength: Comparable to Oak in strength properties but not quite as hard. Although it doesn’t offer great resistance to decay or insect attack, Meranti is resilient to warping, distorting and twisting, making it a practical and reliable choice for woodworking.

Working Qualities: Easy to work with and good results are achievable when using hand and machine tools. Some species, however, may have a minor blunting effect on tools due to the slight presence of silica in the wood - this can be resolved by using steel blades and bits or carbide-cutting tools. Meranti typically glues, stains, sands, mills and finishes well.

Uses: Internal, External

Excellent service

by Mruxton01 (11/12/2020)

You delivered exactly as I had ordered and the timber arrived a little sooner than expected. Con sidering this was all during the pandemic crisis, that was tops for a hobbiest wood worker like myself.
