Our Cut-To-Size Canadian Hard Maple Timber is a smart, off-white and characterful wood, suited to an array of practical and decorative uses. This brilliant hardwood is defined by its hardwearing qualities and attractive finish with a hard yet fine texture and straight grain pattern.

Canadian Hard Maple Timber is ideal for high-traffic and frequently used areas thanks to its high strength, hardness and resistance to abrasion. Responds well to glues and finishes and is easy to work with, however, due to the high density of the timber, it could require a little more work compared with other timber options. May need a staining conditioner to create a consistent colour.

Name: Acer saccharum

Uses: Flooring, kitchen worktops, shop fitting, panelling, furniture, cabinets, table tops, interior joinery, doors, handrails, bannisters, mouldings, panelings.

Country of Origin: Found most abundantly in Eastern Canada, Acer saccharum is native to Nova Scotia, South Quebec and Central and Southern Ontario. Known more commonly as the Sugar Maple Tree, this hardwood is found in woodlands, north facing wooded slopes as well as covered valleys, coves and similar shaded, moist areas.

Woodshop’s Preferred Finish: Osmo 1101 Extra Thin Wood Wax Osmo Polyx hardwax oil 3062, 3032, 3044, Osmo Top Oil 3058, 3068

Durability: Non-durable (less than 5 years)

Density: 600 - 720 Density (Kg/m³)

Colour(s): The heartwood is commonly a darker red-brown colour whereas the more widely used sapwood timber is almost white or a slightly off-white, creamy shade.

The Timber: A premium grade timber with a straight or subtly wavy grain, a fine texture and an appealing overall finish.

Strength: A strong, hard, abrasion resistant and high density timber, but typically non-durable, making it far more effectively suited to interior projects. It can be susceptible to insect attack unless finished and cared for correctly.

Working Qualities: Considered to be reasonably easy to work with when using both hand and machine tools. It also glues and finishes very well, however, due to the high density of the wood, it may require a little extra work. Canadian Hard Maple cut-to-size hardwood can be polished and stained to create an exquisite finish.

With attractive visual characteristics and a resistant surface, Canadian maple can be used for a range of applications.

The wood was of very good quality with no awkward knots or rough patches. Required very little sanding for smooth shiny finish and was an excellent match to the existing wood
